No literally my dog has an annual cbc in a month for some medication she takes and I’m debating doing a full panel just to ease my nerves that she could be dying (she 2 and has absolutely not symptoms of anything but I can’t be too certain) 😭😭

I'm with you. I'm a vet nurse and my pets are getting any diagnostics my vets recommend. My 13 year old dog just had 7k in diagnostics after she had 2 seizures last month. Brain MRI, CSF tap, CT chest and abdo, ultrasound guided FNAs of her liver and spleen, full bloods, coags, CRP etc. Most of which was done on the same day/same anaesthetic. Turns out she had a small haemorrhagic stroke and didn't have a brain tumour or hemangiosarcoma somewhere like we thought she would. Much better prognosis! And a lot less stress for me thinking she only had months to a year left to live!

The one thing I will say about veterinary cost if I take my cat in and the vet veterinarian says it needs a blood test. It cost $300 and he’s happy and healthy. I’m refusing.

I've never once questioned my vet's choices in tests that they recommend. Have I always been able to afford every single thing? No, but I told my vet and they were more than happy to explain which ones they thought were the most important to do. My cat was suspected to have IBD, and even though I couldn't afford biopsies, we did other tests to narrow down the diagnosis and treated him accordingly.

Ok devils advocate here, and I’m not an old man but I am a 1996 graduate. I believe a majority of conditions can be diagnosed with a good history and physical exam. I absolutely recommend diagnostics if the cause is unclear, but I have an issue with vets who go straight to thousands of dollars in diagnostics without a good history and PE. I saw a case here on tiktok where a dog got a spinal MRI for back pain with NO neurological deficits. The ultimate diagnosis was post-bathing furunculosis. How do we go from a skin infection to a $5000 MRI? There is too much dependence on technology. Common sense has left the building.

That’s excessive 😅 I do blood work yearly and x rays in my dog who was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. I also work in vet med 😅

My vet sometimes has to talk me out of doing some diagnostics I might suggest because they really are unnecessary (at that point).

My personal dog started urinating in the house, something she's never done and I had her ass at work sending off UAs, doing AUS, BW, starting medications... all to rule out that it was behavioral when I started locking her in the room with me during the times she would do it. Could I have waited it out? Yes. Would I? Hell no. I know how this can go down and I'm not going to make my dog, the pet I assumed responsibility for, suffer for any reason within my power.

Preventative diagnostics are so important too. I always tell this story about my cat who was found to have a heart murmur at his first kitten visit (which kittens/puppies sometimes grow out of). I later took him to for an echo to be safe and he was diagnosed with HCM and hypertension. I also did regular wellness bloodwork and found early stages of CKD before a year of age. He eventually passed at age 6 due to heart failure, and at that time his CKD had progressed and his kidneys were starting to fail as well. Until his last day he never once acted symptomatic and you never would have known. We caught everything early and we were able to monitor and treat him sooner, which bought us more years together. Had I not done any diagnostics until he acted sick I likely wouldn’t have had him long at all

I’m insane, I do ultrasounds twice a year on my dog, she’s already had an echo, had a full body MRI (needed sx for it though), she was already under the magnet… do the whole dog! But because I’m insane this is why I found out she had IMPA, which she almost died from, I’ll do it all! lol

Had a “normal” dog yesterday who was dripping blood from “somewhere”. Caught immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. She is already a bit anemic, super low platelets, 4DX negative and no cause found. She will probably live thanks to her “paranoid” mom who rushed her in for a little blood.

I had a dog come in this weekend to the ER because the owner worked from home one day this week and noticed he seemed less energetic. That was it. I recommended diagnostics and we found a hemoabdomen and a large splenic mass. Even I wasn’t prepared for the diagnosis because he didn’t present like a typical hemoabdomen.

Diagnostics are super important but I also recognize that I have the privilege of using them on my own pet for little to no cost. IDEXX gives our staff free bloodwork. We don’t charge our staff for rads or in house cytologies or ophthalmic diagnostics. Most of our procedures are free to staff and even sedated or anesthetized procedures are just the cost of the drugs + 10% to cover inventory management expenses. So while I understand the value in saying “I would do this for my own dog,” I also recognize that it costs me almost nothing to do so except maybe my time.

I get free vet care and they still do all the testing. They are angels. Don’t care. They also throw in jokes like “your dog has fattitus” 😂 then did laughing. Also our local old man vet treats all and gives discounts ❤️

Prime example here. My puppy at 6 months old was getting tired after playing for just a few minutes took her in. She had a grade 5 heart murmur, got an echo she has SAS. 1 year later took her in for routine echo. They found fluid in her chest. Drained 2 liters that weekend. SHE WAS TOTALLY NORMAL NO SYMPTOMS! Still acting normal. She has more fluid built up 😭. Take your pets in and get the diagnostics it can save/extend your pets life!!
