He was born in Damascus in 1965 and originally trained as an ophthalmologist in London, but entered politics after the death of his older brother, who had been expected to succeed their father, Hafez al-Assad. Bashar became president in 2000 after his father, who had ruled Syria since 1971, died. His rule became internationally controversial, especially after protests against his government began in 2011 during the Arab Spring. The protests developed into the Syrian civil war, a devastating conflict involving the Syrian government, opposition groups, ISIS, Kurdish forces, and foreign powers. Assad’s government was accused by the UN and human-rights organizations of serious abuses, including torture, arbitrary detention, attacks on civilians, and the use of chemical weapons; the Syrian government denied many of these allegations and blamed armed opposition groups and foreign intervention for the conflict. Assad remained in power for most of the civil war with major military and political support from Russia and Iran. In December 2024, however, opposition forces captured Damascus and Assad’s government collapsed, ending his presidency. He subsequently went into exile in Russia.
