@thisdayinwwi: Aug 9 1919 In Ostend, Belgium, Georges Chevalier takes these colour autochrome photos 107 years ago in their original colour. They show an abandoned Imperial German U-Boat rotting in a dry dock. During World War 1 there were about 350 operational subs, around 200 were lost and 179 surrendered soon after Nov 11 1918. In Steve R Dunn's "Securing the Narrow Sea" it notes that on Oct 5 1918 UB-10, UB-40, UB 59 and UC-4 were all scuttled off the Flemish coast. While Dwight R. Messimer's Verschollen claims UB-40 was scuttled as the Germans abandoned Ostend on Oct 1 1918 #ww1 #wwi #uboat #ww1history #subs
