Seeing K9 Ace and what he is going through brought back something from when I worked in a veterinary clinic many years ago that I have never forgotten. A man brought his cat in and, unfortunately, one of her legs had to be amputated. When she was waking up afterward, she was howling, and I remember standing in front of her cage crying because all I could think about was what she had just been through and how different her life was going to be. One of the veterinarians came over, put his arm around me and said something that has stayed with me all these years. He told me, “Melinda, animals aren't like people. They don't look in the mirror and think about what they look like or what they're missing. They don't sit around feeling sorry for themselves and thinking about how their life used to be. They simply figure out how to go on and live.” At the time I was so emotional that it was hard for me to understand, but over the years I realized exactly what he meant. Animals have an incredible ability to adapt. They don't see themselves as broken or less than they were before. They don't care that they look different. They learn what their body can do now, adjust, and keep going. I have thought about that cat and those words so many times throughout my life, and seeing Aces made me think of them again. He has already shown what an incredibly strong and courageous dog he is, and losing his front leg isn't going to change who K9 Ace is. He is still the same brave police K9, with the same heart, intelligence, drive and love for his people that he had before. He will learn a new way of doing things, just as animals so remarkably do. I am so thankful Aces made it through everything he has been through, and I hope his handler knows that there are so many people out here thinking about this beautiful, brave boy and cheering him on every step of the way. ❤️🐾
