Trump pulled back from new strikes on Iran and Tehran is calling it weakness. The numbers tell a completely different story. This fight stopped being about missiles. It's economic now, and it runs through the Strait of Hormuz. Hormuz is a narrow waterway that moved about 20 million barrels of oil a day in 2024, and Iran has been treating its control of it as leverage over America. Here's what that leverage actually looks like. According to the EIA, 84 percent of the crude moving through Hormuz goes to Asian markets. China, India, Japan and South Korea alone account for 69 percent of it. The United States imports roughly 500,000 barrels a day through that route, which is about 2 percent of American petroleum consumption. So yes, Iran can spike oil prices and make gas more expensive. It cannot shut off America's energy. What it actually does is squeeze Asia and scare markets, and it forces every major buyer of Gulf oil to ask the same question. How long can Iran keep this up. That's where the real leverage sits. AP reports Trump is pivoting back to sanctions and economic pressure under Operation Economic Fury, which began April 16. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it the financial equivalent of a bombing campaign. The naval blockade started April 13. It's working. Iran's oil exports have been cut sharply, inflation is running near 69 percent by IMF estimates, and the crypto wallets tied to their central bank got frozen too. Now look at what Tehran is asking for. Sanctions lifted, frozen assets released, the blockade ended, and war compensation before Hormuz fully reopens. That is not a country dictating terms from strength. That is a regime trying to get paid. Iran is holding a choke point hostage that costs them more than it costs America.
