The last days of Hitler: Few films capture the collapse of a world as powerfully as Der Untergang: The Downfall. Today, April 30th, marks the day Adolf Hitler took his own life in the bunker beneath Berlin, together with Eva Braun. In this extraordinary film, carried by the astonishing performance of Bruno Ganz, we witness the final days of Hitler and the collapsing Nazi leadership. Hitler is portrayed not as a mythical monster, but as a broken and increasingly unstable man: shattered by years of drug use, by the destruction of his own grandiose self-image, and by his growing contempt for the German people themselves. In the end, he could not accept that he had failed; it was Germany, in his eyes, that had failed him. What fascinates me most, though, is the loyalty that still surrounded him in those final days. Even as Berlin burned and the Reich was clearly collapsing, the military leadership around him continued to obey his orders — however detached from reality they had become. They were frightened of him, certainly, but it was more than fear. Somehow, Hitler had embedded himself deeply into the psyche of his followers. That is what makes those last days so haunting. Julius Caesar was assassinated. Napoleon Bonaparte likely would not have inspired this kind of loyalty in total defeat. Joseph Stalin perhaps might have — but there the system itself still endured. In Berlin, in April 1945, everyone knew the system was dying. The Third Reich was finished. And yet they continued to follow him. April 30th, 1945: the death of Hitler. A fitting day to revisit Downfall — one of the most remarkable films ever made about the final collapse of Nazi Germany. #deruntergang #thedownfall #germancinema #warmovies #ww2
