Hong also previously called to “cancel Thanksgiving,” blasting the holiday as a celebration of colonialism and an “original superspreader event.” Hong, who is Korean American, wrote in 2019 that she felt anxious around White people. And after prosecutors declined to bring charges in the 2020 police shooting of Jacob Blake, Hong joined other voices on the left in calling to abolish the police. Despite the string of controversial posts, the former chef and mother of one is now running for the Democratic nomination for governor, joining a wave of socialist candidates challenging establishment Democrats in statewide and federal races this primary season.
