What does it mean to miss somebody? What does it mean to feel that something or someone is no longer there? This is what Jean-Paul Sartre talks about in his book Being and Nothingness. Sartre shares a story where he enters a cafe and he’s looking for his friend Pierre. But Pierre is not there. And so, Sartre experiences Pierre’s absence. Suddenly, people’s faces are transformed into being ‘not-Pierre.’ The room is saturated by Pierre’s not-being-there-ness. We can all relate to what Sartre is saying. If you’ve ever entered the kitchen after some friends or some family or a loved one have gone, you know what it means to experience an absence. The kitchen is the same. It’s the same chairs, the same cutlery, and the same tables. But the room feels subtracted. You sit in your usual chair, but the silence isn’t the same. It’s the silence of somebody not being there. Sartre argues this reveals something important about the human condition, because only a human can organise an experience around what is not there. A table cannot experience an absence. A camera in the café could see the chairs and the tables and the people, but it couldn’t see the Pierre-shaped hole. It takes a human to experience the solid, full, positive reality of a café and then organise it around a negative. Around a nothing. This is why missing somebody hurts the way it does. Because for Sartre, when we love somebody, we organise our world around them. We experience the world with them. And when they are gone and when they are no longer there, the world is different.
