half of you are missing the point here.. our culture, especially our headdresses and regalia, have been culturally appropriated for decades. just passed years at coachella, halloween costumes and probably still a bunch more still happening now. as a young Indigenous woman, I can’t lie, it really did bother me to see that these people didn’t do as much research as they should’ve. people need to understand the teachings and the deep significance behind these items, which take years, sometimes a lifetime, to earn. for example, a headdress is made up of many eagle feathers, which many Indigenous people never receive unless they’ve achieved something of great importance. I’ve been lucky enough to have earned ONE eagle feather in my eighteen years. wearing those headdresses without earning them diminishes the meaning and disrespects those who have spent their lives earning that honour. it seems like more of a “fashion piece” to them. while I appreciate efforts to represent us in canada, why can’t an Indigenous person be the one wearing the regalia if thats the route they wanted to take?

Miss Philippines candidates (including half Filipinos) wear all types of costumes by different tribes in the Philippines and it's never seen as appropriatation but appreciation and representation. Only in English speaking countries where these issues are happening 🤣👍.

Native here, we like it when others wear our clothes and take an interest in our culture. As long as your being respectful, then have all the fun in the world with it. It’s a beautiful fashion that everyone should be able to enjoy

While I understand the indigenous peoples perspective, Isn't the costume supposed to represent Canada, not the model themselves? Shouldn't it be used as a proud moment for indigenous people?
