“burn” vs “first burn” feels like “how eliza felt/expressed how she felt” vs “how everyone perceived her reaction/what alexander heard/perceived” if that makes sense.

I mean I always loved the sheer level of disgust and anger in First Burn because it really showed that Alexander crossed a line with Eliza. Burn is very classy and suited to the character, sure, but First Burn feels like the more appropriate amount of upset for your husband blasting his affair just to clear his own name with no regard for the effect it has on you or your children. It also has the added sting of Eliza appealing to Alexander’s sense of legacy in a way that he wouldn’t fully appreciate until after losing Philip. Both songs are good but I remain convinced First Burn could’ve been given a bit of polish without losing the parts that really sold the sheer anger Eliza must’ve felt that ended up pushing her to remove herself from the narrative.
