Academia loves to call itself a “rational world.” But let’s be real about what that actually means.  The university system was built on a very narrow idea of what counts as professional and scholarly one rooted in white male notions of objectivity and detachment. That shows up in three big ways: 	•	Emotion is seen as unprofessional, so passion, frustration, or vulnerability are written off as a lack of “objectivity.” 	•	Lived experience and community knowledge are devalued, dismissed as “not rigorous.” 	•	Relational and emotional labor — like mentoring, advocating, or building community — goes invisible and unrewarded, even though women and faculty of color carry it the most. For those who don’t fit this mold, the consequences are heavy. It creates exclusion, otherness, and what some call an “attack on the spirit.” And this isn’t about one person’s bias it’s the structure of academia itself. So how do we dismantle this? The 2025 review I’m sharing points to real solutions: 	1.	Redefine what counts as scholarship so community work, mentoring, and critical teaching are actually valued in tenure and promotion. 	2.	Build intentional communities of support, like faculty learning groups and sister circles, so people don’t feel isolated. 	3.	Create mentorship programs that value difference instead of forcing people to “fit in.” Belonging in higher ed isn’t going to come from another diversity statement.
