:To everyone who has a voice that can be heard, and to everyone who has the ability to do something for women in Iraq and contribute to creating change: Please, help my voice reach women’s rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence is supposed to revolve around a husband and a child — that your worth is measured by how well you please them, how quietly you endure what is unbearable, and how much of yourself you are willing to sacrifice. And then, the very child you devoted your life to can be taken away from you. In my country, women have been given such a narrow space in which to live as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, choices, voices, and private lives. And now, even motherhood itself can be taken away from us. How much more must women lose before the world listens to us? Please, hear our voices. Please, help us be seen. And please, do not let Iraqi women continue to disappear behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never truly built to protect them

Help us! In Iraq, women are allowed to marry as young as nine, and mothers are stripped of custody. If a mother refuses, she is imprisoned, even if the father is unfit to care for the child. Women are also not allowed to divorce their husbands; if they wish to do so, they must pay a sum of money. Furthermore, a husband may cheat on his wife, and she has no right to seek a divorce. Help us! Women are also killed simply for mistakes, and the sentence for the murderer is only three years in prison. Help us!

Talk about women in Saudi Arabia!! We urgently need feminist action. We are being oppressed under the black niqab because of our families and social customs and traditions. There is no law that explicitly states that girls cannot be forced to wear the black niqab.

A new law, known as the Jaafari Personal Status Code, has been introduced in Iraq, raising serious concerns about women’s rights and legal protections. We urgently appeal to women’s rights organizations around the world to support Iraqi women and advocate for their rights, dignity, equality, and protection under the law. We ask the international community to listen to the voices of Iraqi women and stand with them in their pursuit of justice and equal rights.
