I am an ambulatory wheelchair user and have been since 5 because of a lifelong genetic condition.... once I turned 13 and my first PCP died nobody was willing to fill out the placard renewal, even when I'd had a cast up to my hip, both legs in casts, or they were sending out scrips for my custom ultralight because long distances were impossible in a standard chair, it wasn't until I was 26 and hugely pregnant that someone was willing to again. 🙃

Does it have to be your PCP that fills out the paper? Or could one of my specialist doctors fill it out?

Girl! (Seizures, fainting, joints popping out, use mobility aids, and high heartrate.) Finding a doctor to fill sign off was so hard for me. I finally went to my chiropractor and told her, and she was, “No, you can’t be walking in a parking lot!” She filled it out, she marched next door to the lawyer office next door and got it notarized right then and there. I was so thankful to her. I was only the third person she had ever signed off for.

I live in Canada and when I got like diagnosed with my disabilities, my doctors were very sweet and automatically did the paperwork after we talked a little and I’ve had it for years. It’s worth it but I don’t drive so I don’t know if I should renew it or not.

If your comfy talking about it, do you mind talking about your experience if you’ve ever tried beta blockers or medication for your POTS? I have MCAS and have a history of horrible reactions to medication, so I’m scared, but one my doc has floated the idea of propranolol. But I also have naturally very low blood pressure just on the regular, so I don’t wanna push it so low I now give myself other problems.

i got mine in like a month, i just asked my dr how to get one, i just signed a paper and my dr took care of the rest for me (this is in maine)

Yep same, but my pcp was like we're going to do the license plate, not the placard. My conditions are for forever.

I messaged my doctor on my chart and the same day she had filled it out left it at the desk and I got my plates😂

Thank you for making this 🫶🏻 I appreciate it! I’m still stuck in the prove it stage so I think it won’t be as straight forward as I’d hoped. I have a great doctor who believes me and is super supportive, but the specialists have been a joke. The rheumatologist I saw said I couldn’t possibly have hEDS because my skin wasn’t super stretchy despite me having every other symptom and research with me documenting that skin involvement for hEDS is often minor. It’s exhausting.

I still only have a temporary placard, but I just passed my one year anniversary of being chronically ill and I'm not sure if i should ask for a permanent one, I do have a dynamic disability so I won't use it all the time, but I feel like I might not be able to get a permanent one, as easily then getting the temporary placard.

My dr gave me a prescription. All I had to do is ask and take that to my bmv/dmv. The hardest part is proving you need it. If you e already been diagnosed it’s a breeze

In my state it’s 100 ft. But yeah once my doctor agreed, it was as easy as going to the dmv and getting the placards / new DL with the placard number on it

the hard part is the doctor for real... I managed to get a 1 year temp one after fighting for over a year and the doctor was like well, we need to have you do more rounds of PT to confirm your hypermobility won't go away
