However, sending heavy video files from central server farms across the ocean would crash the internet and cause constant buffering. To solve this, Netflix splits its system into two separate parts: a cloud "Brain" and thousands of local "Movie Lockers." When you press play, your request goes to the cloud Brain on AWS. This Brain checks your subscription, picks the right video size for your screen, and finds the closest storage server to your house. Crucially, the Brain never sends you the actual movie. Instead, it gives your TV the exact address of a physical storage box sitting right inside your local internet provider's building. Your TV connects directly to that nearby box to stream the video instantly. While you watch, your TV quietly sends tiny updates back to the cloud so it knows where you paused.
