That’s one way I look at it. If you’re genuinely trying to get to know somebody and build a friendship first, why does it have to involve spending a bunch of money? Grab a coffee, go for a walk, talk, and actually learn who each other is. Once you both realize there’s something more there, then yeah, start putting more into the dates. Otherwise, spending a lot right away can create expectations that shouldn’t even be there yet
