Hot take to patients: if your issue can be handled in a typical office visit and your worst issue is having to take PTO you are very very lucky. In the realm of medicine this is a small issue.

The office I work in has done weekends. We scheduled 2-3 providers, and had roughly 25-30 patients, and on average we would get maybe 5-7 patients show up. We would have 2-3 providers, 2 MAs, some times a nurse, and 2 PSRs. The salary load alone made it cost heavy. Today we had 50 patients scheduled, 7 of them didn’t show up. No shows cost ridiculous amounts, not just in money but in access, because a no show we can’t fill with someone on our wait list, just call us a day in advance, we have hundreds of people who would love that spot.

The peds office I used to work for (as a nurse) had weekend hours, but it was a half day for same-day ills and we STILL got no showed sometimes. Or people would just show up 15 minutes late, Starbucks in hand.

work in an optometrist that had Saturday hours. most people no showed and those that came didnt buy in the optical. got rid of them due to not being profitable

Some of us have work to do that can't just be made up whenever. Maybe if we didn't have an artificial cap on the number of residency slots (which the AMA strongly bribed—sorry, "lobbied"—Congress to make happen), there would be enough for offices to run seven days a week.

I own my own practice, provide my employees with PTO, and have never denied them time off to handle what they need to. If a small medical practice can make that work, other businesses can too. Yet physicians often end up bearing the brunt of the frustration because we are the most visible face of healthcare and often the only people patients feel they can direct that frustration toward.

I have managed clinics for over 20 years. Every time we try weekend & evening hours NS’s go way up. We cannot afford to be open. If going to the doctor is important, make the time. Guess what all of us that work office hours in healthcare do… we take PTO for appts

I wish there was SOME doctors that have Saturdays. Not all but like a weekend clinic with limited availability and wait lists. Like an urgent care for non urgent issues and without the high cost of urgent care. But also don't think anyone should be FORCED to do it. Like it would be amazing to have a late night or weekend team available but I understand why not. But I'd rather work weekends and have free week days to bank and other important adulty things without taking pto.

Plus this must be a small city thing? I work in NYC I see my dentist on Saturday . Unless it's a specialist my PCP also has weekend appointments. I see my therapist on the weekend. There's docs who work weekends.

working corporate eyecare- the no shows are ABYSMAL. it's not worth it. People get so mad, but I don't let chronic no shows book on Saturdays. they get hot about it, but it's like, no penalty to cancel ahead of time, hell even same day.

You’re wise to educate people about this. A lot aren’t accustomed to thinking of their doctors as having personal lives like their own. It’s easy to do when medical care is so costly; they pay premiums every two weeks and aren’t seen often.
