As Earth travels around the Sun, it periodically passes through a stream of dust and small particles left behind by the comet during its previous journeys through the inner Solar System. These particles are mostly tiny pieces of rock and dust. When they enter Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, they collide with molecules of air and heat up. This produces a bright streak of light that we see as a “shooting star.” However, stars themselves are not falling. The light is created by small meteoroids as they pass through and interact with Earth’s atmosphere. The name “Perseids” comes from the constellation Perseus. If the paths of the meteors are traced backward, they appear to come from a specific region of the sky known as the radiant. This is why the meteor shower was given its name. The Perseids usually reach their peak in August. Under good observing conditions, many meteors can be seen during a single night, especially in places far away from city lights. The number of visible meteors also depends on factors such as the Moon’s brightness, atmospheric conditions, and the observer’s location. The Perseids are a beautiful example of how small pieces of cosmic material can create a spectacular phenomenon visible from Earth. Although each meteor may remain visible for only a few seconds, together they create one of the most impressive meteor showers of the year. 🌌✨
