This is wrong. Jesus said faith and good works. Paul said faith alone which is why the other brother was praised. Another contradiction.

As both a lifelong “church kid” and growing up with a sibling who was favored over me, I’ve always related heavily with the son who stayed home. It’s still hard for me to see the flaw in his thinking. But I understand now he was thinking his father’s love was conditional and based on a transaction of his service to him, not that his father simply loved his son.

While the first son has to deal with jealousy, the prodigal son would have to work his way through all of his regrets and shame just to decide he wanted to come home. Not just once, but through the rest of his life. Personally, I wish I had been the first one and not the second and I'm only 35.

Maybe the father doesn’t understand one son feels less loved because he shouldn’t have to ask to be shown the same love. That’s the problem. It’s the unrequested effort that shows love. I can see why the obedient son feels slighted.
