Buddy Holly, born Charles Hardin Holley on 7 September 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, was one of the most influential pioneers of early rock ’n’ roll. He developed his musical talents from childhood and formed The Crickets, helping establish the classic rock-band lineup of guitars, bass and drums. His career lasted barely two years, but produced an extraordinary number of classics, including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy!,” “Everyday,” “Maybe Baby,” “Rave On” and “Not Fade Away.” His songwriting, guitar playing and distinctive glasses-and-suit image had a huge influence on later artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. How did he die? Buddy Holly died on 3 February 1959, aged just 22, when the small plane carrying him crashed shortly after take-off near Clear Lake, Iowa. Also killed were Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson. The tragedy became known as “The Day the Music Died.” Rare fact - Holly's surname was actually spelled Holley at birth. A recording contract accidentally misspelled it “Holly,” and he decided to keep the new spelling as his professional name. Legacy: Although he died before his 23rd birthday, Buddy Holly helped lay the foundations for modern rock music, with his influence reaching far beyond his remarkably short recording career. #buddyholly #everyday #50s #fyp - @coley_ked
