if i don’t have a doctorate level of understanding of something, i don’t understand it at all and can’t even attempt a question about it

I’ve never heard anyone else ever describe this! But yes! And this is why I would do poorly on some standardized tests - I could not allow myself to just “guess” an answer, I had to KNOW.

I graduated top 10% of my class and tbh I never even considered my OCD to be part of the equation 😭 specially since I didn’t know I had it until I was in college and it was REALLY impacting me

I always compared my experience in highschool with OCD to a horse with a broken leg winning a race because it was being chased by a rabid dog

This really made things hard in college because not only was I one of the only ones doing the reading and comprehending it, I had to read every single word at full attention or else it didn’t matter. The alternative was adhd coming in and me not doing any work at all RIP

you’re the first person i’ve heard talk about this and I think I need a formal diagnosis cause this is me, but I was also the first person in my family to go to college so I was convinced that if my grades weren’t perfect id fail my family, they’d hate me, everyone would think i’m a failure/fraud, and i’d be in poverty forever 😭

I actually can really empathize with this. My biggest regrets in college have little to do with non-A’s, although they did sting, it was if I thought I had just blustered through the material and didn’t get it! It would just feel like the class was a waste.

i dont think I even considered grades i just thought I was an evil person if I wasn't trying as hard as I possibly could at all times. the good grades made people think nothing was wrong

This is why I struggled I think so badly in math, I really had to emotionally understand and know that why behind everything and that’s obviously not how math taught, you’re not learning math theorem in high school

Girl YES quantum chemistry was soo hard for me because I could never fill that void of not getting to the why of EVERYTHING without being Heisenberg himself

OCD is the disease of doubt and it hates uncertainty. That’s why not understanding something feels so distressing, it’s the root of our disorder. Reading these comments (I keep replying to everyone, I just feel so seen) is so eye opening.

I studied 40+ hours a week for my summer anatomy physiology class… completely unnecessary but I would go in WAY more depth than my professor bc I needed to understand it completely

Thank you for finally giving me the answers—and the words—I needed to understand this part of myself. There were so many times when I would literally cry because I couldn’t understand why it took me so much longer to process something than it seemed to take my peers. I would try to absorb an entire semester’s worth of information in an hour, not realizing that I wasn’t struggling because I couldn’t comprehend it—I was struggling because I felt like I needed to understand every single detail and every possible layer before I could move forward. Things sometimes took me three times as long, not because I wasn’t capable, but because I was trying to comprehend them far beyond what was actually necessary in that moment. I guess it worked out in the end—I graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 in both my bachelor’s and master’s programs—but it came at the cost of putting an enormous amount of pressure on myself. Mental marathoning is REAL.
