@behindmississippi: Fred’s was one of those stores you could walk into for almost anything, from household supplies and snacks to clothes, toys, medicine, and those little things you didn’t even know you needed until you saw them. Fred’s began in 1947, and the company eventually grew throughout the Southeast, becoming especially familiar in small Southern towns. The stores were named Fred’s after Fred Burkle, the brother of one of the company’s early founders. After more than 70 years in business, Fred’s ran into serious financial trouble. In 2019, the company filed for bankruptcy and announced that all of its remaining stores would close, bringing the Fred’s era to an end.
