Women say, “I want you to be more vulnerable.” Fellas, she’s probably not asking you to curl up in her lap and cry because Costco discontinued your favorite protein bars. She’s saying: “I want to feel connected to you.” Put the phone down. Look at her. Listen without trying to fix it. Touch her without immediately turning it sexual. Help carry the weight of the house. Give her 20 minutes of your undivided presence and watch what happens. But ladies… the translation goes both ways. When your man reaches for you physically, he’s not necessarily saying: “I need sex.” A lot of the time he’s saying: “I need to feel connected to you.” That initiation may actually be one of the most vulnerable places he puts himself. She reaches for emotional intimacy. He reaches for physical intimacy. Different door. Same room. And every time one person knocks and hears… “Not tonight.” “I’m tired.” “I’m busy.” “Can we do this later?” …nothing catastrophic happens. That’s what makes it dangerous. One rejection doesn’t destroy a marriage. But eventually, people stop knocking on doors that never open. Love isn’t just feeling something for somebody. It’s showing up for them. Especially when you’re tired. Especially when life is busy. Especially when Netflix has already asked if you’re still watching and, frankly, the answer is becoming a little embarrassing. Put in the reps. 20 minutes of presence. A little affection. A little intimacy. A little help carrying the load. Marriage isn’t complicated. But apparently translating “I need you” into the language your partner actually understands requires a Rosetta Stone and a minor in psychology. Learn their language.
