@graceforpersonalityhires: I was in the thick of a brief controversy last week when OpenAI took a bunch of creators on a brand trip. I saw a lot of the upset and what I can do, from my seat, is share why I’m so bullish on this technology specifically for workers who want to be satisfied and flexible in both life and work. If you have civil questions, I will do what I can to get some expert answers. I will be focusing on AI in the workplace and no- I don’t think it’s going to take your job or artist’s jobs, and I will show you why.
The way you try to deflect and sum up ALL the ethical issues surrounding AI as only environmental, was really weird and off putting. The whole mom exodus thing feels super contrived and a made-for-women AI narrative.

Respectfully disagree. As a working mom and someone that’s been a part of many large companies for 25 years. Corporations are not ready to make the shift to the flexibility and autonomy these tools are supposed to provide.

A lot of working moms who currently enjoy a flexible work schedule are going to be forced into full time work in less desired fields when their partners get laid off from their full time work, which previously supported their flexible work, because of AI.

I really want to believe that the positive effects of AI will be passed down to us office workers. However, I think it’s more likely that our employers will reap the benefits by squeezing more work out of their employees in the same 40-hour week. Maybe I’m just cynical.

If this is so true, why are all the AI companies operating a 9-9-6 model. They are not going to reduce hours, they will just move faster to or cut jobs.

That’s a really optimistic view, but unfortunately not a realistic trajectory based on what most working people are experiencing. Head count continues to decrease, off/near-shoring increases, and expectations are higher for the individuals left. It’s enabled more scope and responsibility, done by people with less expertise.

Hi Grace, I’m still absolutely raging about the comments you received (specifically about bending over for tech bros or however that women worded it). I’m in marketing, a working mom and started a podcast about AI (called AI on the side). I talk about this in the episode I released today and talk about how I’m afraid not having enough women in tech is going to push us into some weird tradwife life post AGI. Would you want to be a guest? https://open.spotify.com/episode/1DuNauWhP3G72NBk3ugHyj?si=MBJo8eoDQ5iLReb2sHI9ag&utm_source=copy-link

I’m confused - where do you explain how AI enables all of these potential lifestyle changes (ie not being in office) in a way that current remote work (pre-AI) does not?

Companies had the opportunity to do this when we switched from memos to emails. They didn’t. They want us in those chairs 9-5, 5 days a week no matter how productive we are.

As someone that works for a fortune 50 company that supports data center construction, we are being monitored for our ‘butts in seats’ now more than ever. And they are using AI to monitor us

This is in complete opposition of what is actually happening in many global work places who are requiring 5 day a week in the office.

100% the fear around AI is often from fear of change, people have a hard time seeing how things will evolve so they think things will fall apart

The working moms who are doing great or thriving are already doing this. But yes hopefully this will help us do it better. I haven’t seen it. The searching hasn’t helped me yet. But I would love if it does!

AI will fundamentally change a lot of things because it is a technological leap. What will that look like? Who knows. Ask all of the people who got all worked up about the combine or the steam engine how their predictions of doom worked out. It doesn’t matter. Most people don’t even know what to do with it, yet. I still have the sound of a dial up modem etched into my memory. No one knew what to do with that tech, either. Welcome to the big show.

Within two years, we will hardly use the keyboard. We will be talking to the AI agents and they will be responding verbally

You also reference change happening bit by bit and not in sweeping movements which I agree with in theory but then how does that compare to the mass layoffs already happening at the excuse of using AI in place of humans. This just feels like trying to put a bow on a truly problematic tool (I’m not saying it doesn’t have any value bc it does but focusing only on the positives is burying the lede).

This would be my dream type of job. Move freely and get my work done and not have impossible metrics to meet like STR that was never a thing of focus when it was only HQRR for so long. What you are saying is something I agree with with.

I just don’t see how you can square this with major companies like JP Morgan and TikTok reverting back to 5-day Return to Office policies. Working moms are not going to not get fired Becuase they have an agent doing things for them if they’re still not at the office. Just say you wanted to go on a brand trip with merch girl
