@purediveresort: Why do hawksbill turtles surface during a dive? A hawksbill turtle must surface to breathe atmospheric air, fully expanding its lungs before descending back to the coral reefs of Nusa Penida, where it can hold its breath for up to 45 minutes during a resting or foraging dive. Floating just below the surface, I watched the rhythmic sweep of its patterned flippers as it prepared to return to the depths. As we descended together, the ambient light shifted from a bright, dappled gold to a deep, calm blue. You could feel the subtle drop in water temperature gliding past the thermocline, accompanied only by the gentle sound of our own slow, rhythmic breathing. Watching this beautiful animal wedge itself into the reef structure to feed on sponges - a process that keeps the coral healthy - is a genuine privilege that never loses its impact. @Diver_501 @360diving_indonesia @angel cafee @Nikon Indonesia Official @Freediving 🐢 Nusa Penida 🏝️ @Marine Megafauna Foundation
