The unfortunate reason that Tasmanian devils are affected by contagious cancer is that they have low genetic diversity, and have for a long time. Very simply, their immune systems don’t recognise the cancer cells from another devil as foreign because they’re so similar to their own cells, meaning they don’t get destroyed and can become tumours in the devil without originating in it’s body. Luckily, not all Tasmanian devils are susceptible, and promoting genetic diversity through captive breeding and such can help wipe out contagious cancers!

I work with them so have more fun facts if ur interested! While they give birth to a lot of young its similar to kangaroos where the baby beans attach to a teats in the pouch for a few weeks while they get bigger. Because tassie devils only have 4 teats only 4 babies will survive at a time. Also the mum will eat the other beans to regain some nutrients. Theyre really cool animals. Also mainly eat roadkill as theyre scavengers so getting hit by traffic is a massive issue. They also eat like 40% of their weight in food per meal and can consume the whole thing including bones. Fun fact is that their scat is so big that multiple people a year see it and think theyve found evidence of the extinct tassie tiger.
