The things I’ve been thinking about over the past week or so have honestly made me sick. I keep coming back to the same thought: This is not the first time a mother has experienced a severe psychiatric crisis after giving birth, and it won’t be the last unless we are willing to have much bigger conversations about postpartum care, psychiatric symptoms, and just how profoundly hormones, brain chemistry, sleep deprivation, and other factors can affect someone’s mind. Postpartum psychosis is not something that can simply be explained away as a mother being “sad,” overwhelmed, or struggling to adjust. Psychosis can involve hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, confusion, and a complete break from reality. I know that personally. I have experienced auditory hallucinations while trying a bipolar medication, and I know how terrifying it is to experience something your brain is telling you is real when it isn’t.
That is why I CANNOT stop thinking about what it must be like for someone experiencing postpartum psychosis while ALSO trying to care for a newborn and two other children, potentially without fully understanding what is happening to them.
None of this erases the unimaginable loss and suffering experienced by the victims and their loved ones in cases like this. It is possible to hold compassion for victims while also recognizing that severe psychiatric illness deserves compassion, research, education, and intervention. Those things do not have to be mutually exclusive. What hurts most is knowing that sometimes people are asking for help while they are already in crisis, and the systems around them may not recognize just how serious that crisis is until something irreversible happens.
We need accessible postpartum psychiatric care. Because by the time everyone realizes someone needed help, it can be too late for everyone involved. The loss is permanent. The children are gone. A mother is gone. And we are left trying to make sense of something that may have involved a devastating illness that was not treated.
Courtney, I love you. I believe you, I hear you, and I’m so grateful you’re here. ⭐️💓
