@narcfamilies: Hi, it's Juliana! Imagine your arm decided to detach from your body and start living its own life. Would you be okay with that? Probably not. Why? Because it's YOUR arm! It doesn't get to be independent. It's supposed to go where you go and do what you want it to do. And that's kind of what's going on here. Your narcissistic parent doesn't really view you as a separate person. You're more of an extension of them. So just like you wouldn't be okay if your arm tried living its own life... They're not okay with you becoming more independent. So if you say something like: “I'm going to get my own phone plan.” One of the ways they'll try to stop that from happening is by "helping." “Don't be ridiculous. Stay on ours. Why waste the money?” Sounds generous. But now there's something keeping you dependent on them. So if you set a boundary or do something else they don't like... They have something they can hold over your head: “If you're going to ignore me, maybe I should cancel your phone.” And the same thing can happen with: – Money. – Tuition. – Housing. – Cars. – Insurance. – Childcare. – Jobs. Because the goal isn't to help you become an independent adult. It's to keep you dependent, or at the very least, compliant for as long as they can. If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹

Yup. And once they’re no longer useful financially, they wonder why their kids don’t want to be around them anymore.

Bruh this is so validating even tho I've always known. Like when my mom surprised me w a car for my 16th birthday without asking then made me pay for it as soon as she got mad at me or needed to control me financially.

Wouldn’t let me pay for my own phone or have the car in my own name. Now guess what they use as leverage? 😅

My dad does this fun thing where he doesn't understand why I want to keep my things separate (my own car, car insurance, food, etc). And the reason is simple. He likes to take advantage of people. So he will criticize the fuck out of me for wanting my own car because its "a waste of money" but in reality he wants me to use his car so eventually he can go "well you use the car as well" that then eventually becomes "well you use it more than me" and then he gets to keep the car in his name and the insurance in his name but because I "use it more" (which is a lie) I am 100% in charge of paying for all the mandatory yearly maintenance and checks (EU laws), the insurance, any mechanic fees, etc. So he just gets to mooch.

never ask these types of people for help, they will ALWAYS use it against you. I recently decided to never ask my parents for help ever again.

Also, parents like this act like they’re your safety net, when they’re really more of a spider web and you get stuck there

My father, without telling me, cut off my internet and stopped paying my phone plan, while I was stuck in a hospital for two months. That was a fun time

When I graduated my mum said she'd buy my graduation and prom dresses for me, then forced me to wear a graduation dress I felt uncomfortable in by threatening to make me pay her back for the prom dress. Good times.

The caption is hilarious. My mother used to quite literally tell me that I was and always would be part of her, "like her arm." 🫠
