The science of running, the research, the theory… is all great. But we have to take that insight and scale it to an individual. Just because research tells us that ‘running more’ is one of the best ways of improving our running (makes sense)… DOES NOT necessarily mean that you should. There are so many factors to consider when increasing a runners training load: Injury history Training experience Race experience Time availability Work & life stressors Ultimately, as a coach, if I want you to run more, I’ve got to keep you injury free. If we don’t do that, you ain’t running anyway. And although aches, pains, and injuries come as part of the territory of working your body hard towards a goal that pushes you out of your comfort zone… We want to minimise your risk of obtaining an injury. And that’s why it’s important to find a program that is as close to being tailored to you as you can possibly get it with the resources you have available. Cookie cutter plans just don’t cover enough bases and take into account personal circumstances. Running MORE doesn’t mean jumping suddenly from 3 to 5x runs per week. It’s keeping you running consistently for as long as possible in order for you to make the most amount of progress possible. For one runner, that’s a 20-week marathon block of training consisting of 3x runs 1x bike session + 2x strength sessions. Progressing intensity gradually For another runner, that’s the same 20-week marathon block of training but progressing from 3-5x runs, 2x strength sessions+ 1x rest day, and increasing intensity gradually. Program design is circumstantial. Focus on yourself, and not what others are doing around you. You’ll likely get a lot further with your running goals 🤙
