Luigi Mangione will face an anonymous jury when his highly watched trial begins in New York next month. The 28-year-old appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court on Aug. 11 for a final pretrial hearing. Judge Gregory Carro ruled that jurors deciding Mangione’s fate will remain anonymous, with jury selection scheduled to begin Sept. 8. The decision comes just one day after prosecutors raised concerns that some of Mangione’s supporters could attempt to intimidate jurors or witnesses. Unlike a standard jury, anonymous jurors do not identify themselves by name during jury selection. The practice is commonly used in high-profile cases where concerns about outside pressure exist. The hearing also featured a heated dispute over public and media access to the upcoming trial. Judge Carro rejected suggestions that prosecutors had influenced decisions about courtroom access, saying the court had never planned to exclude or limit the public or press. He also confirmed that an overflow room is being arranged. Mangione’s attorneys had previously objected to limits on media access and argued that their client has a constitutional right to a public and unbiased trial. Prosecutors denied having any role in selecting journalists and later warned that expanded public access could create risks of spectator misconduct, including attempts to interfere with jurors or witnesses. Mangione is accused of unaliving UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024. He was arrested five days later in Pennsylvania and has pleaded not guilty. If convicted in the New York state case, Mangione could face 25 years to life in prison. Now, with an anonymous jury and intense public attention surrounding the case, the courtroom is preparing for a trial unlike many others. The question remains: what will happen when jury selection begins on Sept. 8? #TrueCrime #LuigiMangione #CrimeNews #CourtCase #BreakingNews
