The first clocks weren’t created to discover the “correct time.” Humans first learned to measure time by observing repeating patterns in nature. The most obvious one was the Sun. Earth’s rotation makes the Sun appear to move across the sky in a predictable cycle. People noticed that sunrise, midday, sunset, and nighttime happened in regular patterns. Ancient civilizations used these observations to create early timekeeping devices such as sundials and water clocks. A sundial used the position of the Sun’s shadow, while a water clock measured time by controlling the flow of water. Eventually, humans divided these repeating cycles into standardized units: days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Mechanical clocks came much later and were designed to count regular oscillations or movements, rather than “knowing” the time themselves. So a clock doesn’t actually know what time it is. It measures the passage of time according to a reference system humans created and calibrated using nature. And today, our most precise clocks use something far more consistent than the Sun: atomic transitions. The modern second is defined using the frequency of radiation associated with cesium-133 atoms.
