Everyone is sharing this story right now, and two details keep getting left out. Both matter more than the headline does 📌⠀ The first is that the bot did not stop at half the work. It handled 47% of customer contacts in its first two years and 74% now, and those retrained workers still have jobs. The second is the part almost nobody mentions. The companies that own and franchise IKEA are privately held. No earnings call, no shareholders demanding AI savings next quarter. That is the condition that made this possible, and why your publicly traded employer is unlikely to run the same play. Worth noting they still cut hundreds of corporate roles this spring. Just not in that department.⠀ So the useful question is not whether your company will be IKEA. It is whether you would make the redeployment list if it were.⠀ 1️⃣ The list exists before the announcement. By the time restructuring gets communicated, someone has already sorted the org into people worth retraining and people worth paying out. That sorting happened months earlier and you were not in it.⠀ 2️⃣ Being excellent at your function is not what gets you sorted correctly. Being legible is. If the only people who can articulate your value sit inside your team, you are a headcount number to everyone above them.⠀ 3️⃣ Separate your task list from your knowledge. Your tasks are what a system absorbs. Your knowledge is the judgement, context, relationships, and what you understand about the customer that has never been written down.⠀ 4️⃣ Get on the pilot. The people implementing AI inside a function are almost never the people cut by it, and volunteering early is the cheapest positioning move available right now.⠀ 5️⃣ Make your expertise transferable on purpose. Knowledge locked in one head reads as operational risk. Knowledge that has been documented, taught and handed over reads as leadership material, and those labels lead to very different rooms 🎯⠀ #aiandjobs #careeradvice #careerstrategy
