NIGERIA IS THE FIRST COUNTRY TO HAVE TV😱 How many of you know that Nigeria is the first country to have a national TV? And it all started with this great man, the premier of the Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo. At a time when many countries in Europe were still struggling to set up national television, even a country like Egypt did not have TV until 1960, Nigeria was already on air, already broadcasting, already leading the way. Obafemi Awolowo, who was born in Ogun State, in Ikenne to be precise, wanted a way to educate and inform his people. He did not wait for the white men to do it. He moved first. He went ahead and created Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in Ibadan. Interestingly, the plan was first to build the television station in Abeokuta, but the idea was later changed to Ibadan because many of the key stakeholders were based there at the time. The TV was not just for music and movies. WNTV was built to broadcast educational programs to schools across the region, shaping minds and building the future. In 1959, Chief Awolowo who also had his estate at Obasanjo Hilltop in Oke Mosan today was already setting the pace for the entire continent. From the first TV station to the first stadium, the famous Liberty Stadium, Nigeria was moving ahead while others were still catching up. We were the “Tech Giants” before the word was even invented. As we look at our media space today in 2026, with all our streaming apps and digital stations, let us not forget our Ogun State abinibi, the pioneer who showed us that Nigeria can always be number one. How many of you were born to meet and watch WNTV? Let’s hear from you in the comments 👇 Onuche Onueje #businesstycoon #truelifestory
