I remember reading somewhere that the USSR really went in with phages using them to make bespoke treatments for people with some success but it was very expensive and time-consuming, maybe now that won't be as much of an issue

I believe it's bacterial phage, that invades the RNA of either bacterias or viruses. It sort of takes over the hosts and destroys it. Apparently these phages are harmless to humans .... It's up for debate though.
