@congosoundsradio: From Tabora, Tanzania, Tabora Jazz became one of the important names in the history of muziki wa dansi. Led by the brilliant guitarist, composer and singer Shem Ibrahim Karenga, the band rose to prominence in the 1970s with classics such as “Dada Asha.” Among the notable musicians associated with the band were: 🎸 Shem Ibrahim Karenga — leader, guitarist, composer & singer 🎸 Kassimu/Kassim Kaluona (Kaluwona) — rhythm guitarist 🎸 Salum Luzira — bassist, whose playing on Dada Asha No. 2 became particularly influential 🎤 Wema Abdallah 🎶 Salum Zahoro 🎸 Athuman Tembo 🎶 Salum Muzila Tabora Jazz's rapid guitar style became particularly significant beyond Tanzania. Its guitar work, especially that of Karenga and Kaluona, is credited with influencing Congolese guitarists and the development of the kwasa kwasa style. The band later suffered a dramatic setback when its instruments were damaged by an electric shock, leading to its dissolution in the mid-1980s. Karenga later helped revive the name as Tabora Jazz Stars. Did you grow up listening to Tabora Jazz?
