@chrismulindwa: The farmer who buys a 6 week old piglet at UGX 200,000, feeds it using QF 30% (Pig A), and sells it at about 20 weeks. The calculations allow the pig to remain on the farm up to 21 weeks in case marketing is delayed. Table 1 – FEEDING PLAN & FEED CONSUMPTION This table tells you how much feed one pig needs from 6 weeks until sale. From 6–12 weeks, the pig receives Starter feed at 1 kg per day. Over 42 days, it consumes 42 kg, costing UGX 77,364. From 12–17 weeks, it receives Grower feed at 1.5 kg per day. Over 35 days, it consumes 52.5 kg, costing about UGX 87,308. From 17–21 weeks, it receives Finisher feed at 2 kg per day. Over 28 days, it consumes 56 kg, costing UGX 75,880. Therefore, one pig consumes approximately 150.5 kg of feed from purchase at 6 weeks to sale at 21 weeks, costing approximately UGX 240,552. Table 2 – COST OF RAISING ONE PIG Buying the piglet costs UGX 200,000. Feeding it from 6 to 21 weeks costs approximately UGX 240,552. Therefore: UGX 200,000 + UGX 240,552 = UGX 440,552 This means approximately UGX 440,552 is invested in buying and feeding one pig up to market. This is important: UGX 440,552 is not the complete farm cost. A farmer should still consider medicines, vaccines, labour, water, housing, transport and possible mortality. Table 3 – SALES & EXPECTED PROFIT If the pig reaches 100 kg live body weight and the farmer receives UGX 8,000 per kg live weight: 100 kg × UGX 8,000 = UGX 800,000 After subtracting the piglet purchase and feed costs: UGX 800,000 − UGX 440,552 = UGX 359,448 So the farmer has a gross margin of approximately UGX 359,448 per pig before the other farm expenses mentioned above. The advantage becomes clearer when several pigs are fattened. For example, selling 10 pigs at 100 kg each gives sales of UGX 8,000,000 and an estimated gross margin of about UGX 3,594,480, before other expenses. Table 4 – INGREDIENT PRICES This table explains where the feed cost figures come from. The calculations use the ingredient prices shown in the table. If broken maize, maize bran or QF concentrate prices change, the cost of feeding the pig will also change. Farmers should therefore recalculate their feeding cost whenever ingredient prices change. Pig fattening is not simply about buying a pig and waiting for it to grow. Profit comes from controlling three things: the price you buy the piglet, the cost and quantity of feed consumed, and the weight and price at which you sell.
