The family of a missing man with Down syndrome is suing a care agency and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) after he was trapped in a locked station room for six days. ​In October 2023, 31-year-old Rashawn Williams went missing after wandering away from his caregiver. Surveillance footage showed him entering the Glenmont Metro Station. According to the lawsuit, Williams tried to ask a station manager for help, but the employee reportedly ignored him to continue a personal phone call. Frustrated, Williams walked further into the station. He ended up opening a door to a secure emergency area, which locked automatically behind him. ​For six days, Williams remained trapped in complete darkness without access to food, water, or restroom facilities.
