Hug Me, 2024. Silicon, plaster, yarn, metal. “I created this because I wish I had seen it growing up…” My process comes from a deep, personal introspection — the final work is just the tip of an iceberg from my daily meditations. Hug Me is an autobiographical reflection of gendered visual norms, the dominance of media constructs, and personal experiences. In juxtaposition with the historical and cultural imageries of women characterized by fuller breasts, I intentionally position my body — one that deviates from the “ideal human form” as a site of resistance. To love my “perceived imperfection”is to reject patriarchal powers, those that glorify large breasts and pink nipples, and exploitative representations of women. Growing up as a smaller-chested Asian I naively absorbed an inferiority complex imposed upon women. Only now, with maturity and deeper understanding, that I have fully recognized of these ingrained injustices. Hug Me serves as a physical embodiment of my defiance against their control over my worth and identity.
