GUS • PART 3 🐴 | Let's talk about one of the most debated parts of hoof trimming… TOP TRIMMING! 👀 Well, Gus certainly got everybody talking in Parts 1 and 2! 😂 So let's keep the conversation going. Today we're working on his right hind hoof, and remember, I was told Gus had been trimmed less than two weeks before I arrived. There's really not much excess hoof to remove from the bottom. But that doesn't mean there's nothing left to address. This time, most of my work is on the OUTSIDE of the hoof. I'm walking you through how I use my rasp to bring back the toe, round it rather than leaving it pointy, address hoof wall flares, and work toward better overall hoof balance. And that brings us to a subject that always seems to stir up opinions… TOP TRIMMING. Some people believe you should NEVER rasp the outside of a horse's hoof. Others recognize that carefully addressing flares and excess hoof wall can be an important part of a balanced trim. Here's my perspective after more than 25 years underneath horses: A good hoof trim isn't always finished when you're done with the bottom. When done appropriately, top trimming can help address hoof wall distortion, reduce excess flare and improve the shape and balance of the hoof. The key is knowing WHAT to remove, HOW MUCH to remove and what needs to be left alone. I'm not talking about aggressively rasping away healthy protective hoof wall just to make a foot look pretty. There's a difference between correcting a hoof and simply making it look good. Every horse is different. Every hoof tells its own story. And every adjustment I make should have a reason behind it. That's why I explain what I'm seeing and what I'm doing throughout these videos. I want horse owners to better understand hoof balance, long toes, hoof wall flare, barefoot horse trimming, hoof angles, proper farrier care and what a balanced horse hoof should look like. Gus is coming along nicely, and we're one foot closer to finishing this tune-up. 🐴❤️ Now I'm curious… 👇 HORSE OWNERS & FARRIERS: What's YOUR opinion on top trimming? Necessary part of hoof care, or something you prefer to avoid? Let's have a good educational conversation. Different opinions are welcome! #farrier #hoofcare #horse #horsecare #equestrian
