Xenia is a soft coral, which means it doesn’t have a hard skeleton. Instead, it moves and pulses to stay stable. Scientists often see it as a sign of a healthy reef, when it thrives, the ecosystem around it is usually doing well too.
But in some reefs, Xenia can spread aggressively and outcompete other corals, turning parts of the ecosystem into soft-coral-dominated areas with reduced biodiversity.
