As #pridemonth 🏳️‍🌈 comes to an end, this personal project is dedicated to black masculine women and our hair. featuring @afrokyd (IG), @OG COURTS, @Nana Duncan, @Sheyi & @Betty 🤞🏾 Hair is at the centre of black expression. Like much of our existence the way we choose to wear our hair is political given the level of policing and shame society attaches to our natural curls. This is why black women’s choice to wear their natural hair is often regarded as emblematic of a radical acceptance. For black masculine-presenting people, however, this choice is complicated by their desire to express both their blackness and their masculinity. Opting out of the traditional definition of ‘woman’, eliminates a wide range of hairstyles that are typically associated with feminine presenting people. This often leaves black masc people with natural hair as the most suitable choice of hairstyle that not only fits our personal aesthetic but is also authentic and affirming of our masculinity. As a result, we have learnt to embrace and wear our hair with a quiet but enduring pride. And despite there being a sense of limitation with hairstyles that aligns with our gender expression, black mascs show us how there can still incredible versatility and creativity within this form of black hair and expression. Courtney, Nana, Morgan, Betty & Sheyi each sport a hairstyle that is unique to them and their journey with their gender expression. From locs to cornrows and fades, this series spotlights a section of black person-hood that rarely gets to sit next to the definition of beauty despite embodying everything that is beautiful. In a world that forces women at large to constantly manipulate everything about themselves in order to fit into what patriarchy declares a woman is; this series displays the authenticity, creativity and acceptance it takes for a black masculine woman to resolutely decide on a daily basis to rock their wash & go. A big thank you to @Nai 💕 & @Oyinkansola for your support in bringing this to life. And a big thank you to @Gelmira Manico on the styling consult 🥰 #photography #filmphotography #mediumformat #mamiyarz67 #Pride #fyp #blackfemalephotographer #cecred #wlw
