@pdavisjones: Affordability should be more than a campaign slogan. If politicians are serious about the cost of living, they should look at the policies and institutions that make housing, healthcare, education and childcare more expensive in the first place. I'm going to look at inflation, zoning and housing restrictions, expensive health insurance, the strange power of college accreditation bodies, occupational licensing, and childcare regulations—and asks a basic question: why do we keep subsidizing systems that are expensive, ideological or plainly dysfunctional? If politicians don't start taking this issue seriously and coming forward with good ideas, then this issue is going to be surrendered to the crazy socialists, and we don't want that. #news #politics #democrat #republican

For those that didn’t see this coming during Covid…Americans need to understand economics. We printed so much money during Covid. Of course that had consequences!

If I could change one thing, I want the Fed to stop printing money. Cold turkey. Force Congress to balance budget. Overspending causes inflation.

Great job covering this. It’s pretty simple if we cut back to 2019 spending levels I think it was $4.47 trillion and spending and our current revenue right now is $5 trillion. We’d have a surplus. To your point in 2021 during the Covid stimulus years, they printed over $6 trillion and DC handed it out like candy to everybody. This was 10 times the amount of tarp at $600 billion which was huge at the time. This is why we have the 25 to 40% in inflation We see the last five years. Keep up the great content.

Data like this is likely above most of the population. To fix we need 1) executive leadership at all levels (and good luck), and 2) create programs with better accountability for performance (like threat of "loss of governmental tenure and benefits"). Right now, laws have no accountability for failure for the authors.

While I agree that inflation has been running way too hot since Covid and that is largely the fault of the fed’s balance sheet, we need to accept the long-term 2% inflation. The simple fact is, economies die without at least a little inflation. It motivates investment and wards off deflation which is the true death knell of an economy. It is also why economist are concerned with low birth rates, and why we need legal and manageable immigration. In reality, we don’t have a strong economic theory to run an economy that doesn’t exhibit signs of growth, like inflation.

I've been saving for a decade for my son's college. Prices have increased so much that I still only have enough to pay for a year in most private schools and two years in a state school. It's fucking wild.

I have a $15,000 deductible on my Obama Care Bronze plan. Obama said I wouldn’t lose the catastrophic plan I had. Now I have an insurance plan that pays nothing unless I have a catastrophe, but costs twice as much.

If I’m speaking for the governor of Illinois, I say raise taxes on the middle class a lot and raise minimum wage by a lot in a short period of time. Problem solved!

Occupational licensing is a police power, but more states sign up for compacts and reciprocal agreements on licensure standards. It really depends on the field. It’s a standards issue, some are looser than others.

The %increase in money supply is similar to the % increase in inflation. Hmm 🤔 maybe that’s the problem and correlated with the problems today. All rising prices Healthcare/housing/college are backstopped and subsidized by the govt
