@cbsmiami: A group of Florida International University students has filed a federal lawsuit against the school and several top leaders, alleging their First Amendment rights were violated after they were punished for a silent anti-ICE protest. The case stems from a March 13 protest in which students wearing “ICE OFF FIU” shirts briefly stood during a campus event and walked out. The demonstration lasted less than five minutes and, according to the lawsuit, did not disrupt the event. Six students were found responsible for violating FIU’s ban on indoor expressive activities and received written reprimands and orders to submit two-minute videos explaining the regulation. Their appeals were denied, and they were told failure to submit the videos could result in holds on their academic records. The lawsuit argues the policy is unconstitutional and overly broad, and asks the court to block its enforcement against ICEBreakers members. The students are represented by the ACLU Foundation of Florida, the Community Justice Project and two other firms.
