![Ten years ago today, Gus released Vertigo. He created the four track extended play in his bedroom in Long Beach in December 2015, shortly after releasing Live Forever at the beginning of the month. Since the summer, Gus had met many new collaborators via SoundCloud and, during that time, met and befriended producer John Mello. Like all of Gus’s 2015 music, Vertigo was made entirely online, with John sending Gus beats and Gus recording, mixing, and sending back the completed songs. 2015 was a very productive and exciting year for Gus. From spring to fall, he made and released a number of EPs, an 18 track collaborative mixtape with Boy Froot, and his first and second solo mixtapes. He was on a roll. Right off the back of releasing Live Forever, Gus created and released “come around” on December 5 using a beat sent to him by John Mello. Nine days later, he released another song, “shiver,” which John co produced with Hector Vae. Gus and Hector had previously worked together on two songs that appeared on the Live Forever mixtape. As the month went on, Gus created two more songs with John, “drugz” and “M.O.S [battery full].” He took to Twitter to announce their EP, Vertigo, and released it to SoundCloud on December 19. For the Vertigo cover art, Gus used a photo of a painting by his friend Lil Skil, who later animated the “drugz” music video, which was shot by Gus’s girlfriend Emma while they were in Cambridge, Mass for Christmas. That fall, Emma had shot a couple of music videos for songs on Gus’s first and second mixtapes. One night in Cambridge, the two headed to a neighborhood park, where they decided to make a video for “drugz” after Gus started playing the song on his phone. Gus loved Christmas lights, and how the ones in the park made it difficult for Emma to focus the camera. He felt it matched the energy of the song perfectly. When Gus returned to Long Beach after Christmas, he began working with a budding local director named Jon Francois on more Vertigo videos. On January 11, he went with friends Angelo and Ian to meet up with Jon, who ended up casting all three of them in the “M.O.S [battery full]” video. Although this was new territory for Gus and he was nervous at first, he impressed Jon and received a message after the shoot telling him he was “a natural.” The next day, when they met again at a motel to film a video for “come around,” Gus brought Emma along. He explained to Jon that he felt more comfortable working alongside his girlfriend than with an actor. This time, Gus was more confident on camera and even shared his own visual ideas inspired by Ricky Hil’s “Dealer Man.” The release of Vertigo on December 19, 2015 marked the end of a hugely productive year for Gus. The project also signaled the beginning of a new and pivotal chapter, with two of its associated music videos being shot by a budding director in early January 2016, around the time he and Nedarb announced their EP CALIFORNIA GIRLS, and shortly before Gus left Long Beach to perform with Schemaposse in Tucson.](/video/cover/7585623279310818590.webp)
