“I don’t know” is soo common to come up when we feel overwhelmed! In therapy, it’s often a protector that learned early that knowing your own feelings wasn’t safe. When a child had to stay attuned to everyone else, their moods, reactions, and unpredictability, turning inward could be risky. So the system adapted by not knowing. That response doesn’t disappear just because you’re an adult. It shows up as freeze, blankness, or uncertainty when you’re asked what you feel. The work isn’t forcing clarity.
