How does he feel about snaps? You could modify his shirt to have the buttons on the closure side and then run snap tape on the inside.

if it’s less about the buttons and more about preferring t-shirts, nordstrom has this which seems to be like a t-shirt cotton jersey fabric. may help with matching everyone but not sacrificing comfort. I just found it online so unsure on quality but just thought i’d share.
