I have unlimited PTO, and I take around 5 weeks a year without an issue. Not every company is the same.

It’s an Accounting scam, so they don’t have to accrue saved PTO on the books as a liability.

We have unlimited PTO at my job and people are constantly using it. We are encouraged all the time to take it and despite working from home were told frequently to take the sick days when we need them. This is not always the case, but for some companies it is

I would never take unlimited PTO. I’ll stick with my 25 days, 2 personal days, 1 diversity day AND 8 sick days a month. Plus time earned in lieu of overtime.

This TT is riddled with inaccuracies. Only the states of CO and CA require employers to pay accrued vacation when an EE leaves a company. It is up to the employer to determine whether or not to pay accrued unused time at separation. Only about ~67% of companies pay vacation at separation. People actually use the same amount of time they typically do and sometimes slightly more on unlimited or flexible vacation. This is backed by study after study. Also, the savings are fictional as accrual liabilities do not have to be saved by companies in a reserve so there are no actual savings. As benefits consultant, I have worked with several clients to design and implement successful well received unlimited vacation plans. It is not unlimited PTO because that implies paid sick is included which it is not. That is a whole other subject.

I'm too European for this, if we have unlimited PTO and didn't use it the company still needed to pay me for 4-5 weeks off by law

Accrued PTO is a better benefit than “unlimited”. It’s also just a way for them to not pay you out unused days if you leave

That’s not really why they do it, it’s because when people leave they don’t have to pay it any remaining balance for PTO if state law requires. That’s the real savings.

They'll put so much work on your plate that you cannot take time off.

I was up to 22 vacation days when we switched to "unlimited." You bet I'm taking AT LEAST 22 days a year, & then a few more now. 😉

Mine doesn’t offer unlimited but if they did, I’d have no problem taking off even if they “guilt tripped” me. We’re not surgeons. It will be okay lmao

I've never worked anywhere where unlimited PTO didn't come with a big * ... it was ALWAYS still tied to your manager signing off on your time and brought up during quarterly and annual reviews

we are moving to flexible PTO that they specified is performance based. they don't even like us taking accrued PTO during our busy season/4th quarter

I’m at a job with this policy and I only took it bc I lost my job last year and this kinda landed in my lap. When I say that I have never felt so much freedom to take time off I’m not joking!!!! I got hired in Nov of 2025 and to date I think I’ve taken off 5 weeks!!!! At my last job I only had 3 weeks for the entire year and I had to wait for it to accrue😭😭 my salary is less in this job by a lot but the freedom to take time off when I want and for as long as I want within reason has been LIFECHANGING
