Liver Fluke Definition: Liver flukes are parasitic flatworms (trematodes) that live in the liver and bile ducts of animals and humans, causing liver disease known as fasciolosis. Common Species: Fasciola hepatica (Common liver fluke) Fasciola gigantica (Giant liver fluke) Hosts: Sheep Cattle Goats Buffaloes Humans (occasionally) Intermediate Host: Freshwater snail Life Cycle (Simple): Eggs are passed in the feces of infected animals. Eggs hatch in water and release miracidia. Miracidia infect freshwater snails. Cercariae leave the snail and attach to plants as metacercariae. Animals become infected by eating contaminated grass or drinking contaminated water. The immature flukes migrate to the liver and mature in the bile ducts. Clinical Signs: Weight loss Anemia Pale mucous membranes Bottle jaw (swelling under the jaw) Poor growth Reduced milk production Diarrhea (sometimes) Death in severe infections Diagnosis: Fecal examination for eggs Blood tests ELISA Liver lesions at postmortem examination Treatment: Triclabendazole Closantel Nitroxynil Albendazole (effective mainly against adult flukes) Prevention and Control: Deworm animals regularly. Control freshwater snails. Avoid grazing in wet, marshy areas. Provide clean drinking water. Maintain good pasture management.
