🔥 “Prayer is our most formidable weapon.” – E. M. Bounds Edward McKendree Bounds (1835–1913) was an American Methodist preacher, editor and writer whose name became closely tied to prayer. Born in Shelby County, Missouri, on August 15, 1835, he trained in law and was admitted to the bar while still young. During the revival years of the late 1850s he left law for ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The Civil War cut across his early ministry. Bounds was arrested by Union authorities in Missouri and imprisoned. After his release he served as a Confederate army chaplain, and was wounded and captured again during the Battle of Franklin in 1864. After the war he returned to Franklin, Tennessee, and helped rebuild Methodist work there before serving churches in Alabama and St. Louis. Bounds later worked with the St. Louis Christian Advocate and the Nashville Christian Advocate. But the work for which he would be remembered was being formed away from public notice. In his later years at Washington, Georgia, he gave long early-morning hours to prayer, Scripture and writing. 🔥 In Purpose in Prayer he wrote, “Prayer is our most formidable weapon,” adding that it was also the weapon Christians were often least skilled in using. For Bounds prayer was learned by praying. Preaching and ministry lost their power when prayer was pushed to the edge. “Pray without ceasing” 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Only a small part of his writing reached print before his death on August 24, 1913. Claude Chilton and Homer Hodge later preserved and edited his manuscripts, and books such as Purpose in Prayer, The Necessity of Prayer, The Weapon of Prayer and Prayer and Praying Men appeared after him. His 1907 Preacher and Prayer became widely known as Power Through Prayer. More than a century later his books remain in print and circulate freely around the world. Bounds left no large organisation carrying his name. He left pages that still make people ask how much of their work for God is actually being carried by prayer. 🔥 — #EMBounds #Quoted #SpiritBroods #PrayerLife #PowerThroughPrayer
