LOL No, you don't make a player take a level in a class they didn't plan to, ESPECIALLY a new player. Cursed Item I could understand, but railroading? No bueno, don't do that.

i took a spin on krabat and made the 'master of the mill' a boss. he dropped the Koraktor and our barbarian picked it up. She is now a BarbLock

love doing that when my character dies I have a thing with the DM that I roll a d20 and it has a god and class attached to it and I lose a level and pick that one up

Wouldn’t they gain a free level of warlock? I know it’s a skit but forcing a player to level up a certain way seems really bad they should still level up but the sword grants them it or the warlock attributes not denying them 7th level

Sometimes your character isn’t that bright. Sometimes I’m tired of playing it safe. And sometimes I want the DM to get the satisfaction of letting their evil plan play out. Regardless, it’s always a good time!

this is why I love new players so much. they don't feel constrained by the mechanics and when they learn they can pretty much try to do whatever they want they come up with the coolest ideas

I've been playing d&d since 2nd edition AD&D. I. touch. everything. Someone has to make the DMs work worth it. Plus, making a new character is the best part.

This reminds me od a group I was in several decades ago. We had a member who was in the "speed of light club" i.e. if someone found something, he would immediately pick it up. The DM being tired of this, created a magical, Intelligent sword. This sword was cursed to be -10 to +10 on every attack. Its preferred language was Swahili and ha a reverse word of recall on it. Like other cursed objects, which come back to you if you try to throw them away, this sword brought you to it.
