Student of military history here. I say that because my readings are rather narrow; I read what interests me. Everything I have read from sources on both sides of WWII said the Waffen SS were elite formations given the best equipment. They were universally respected if not feared by their opponents. {I know the Einsatzgruppen were the scum and bottom of the barrel} There were nearly million soldiers in the Waffen SS, surely they weren’t all the dregs or has everything I read been perpetuating a myth?

That is not an accurate picture and minimizes the power and influence built by this organization . it may be comforting to look at its least supreme members, but its only a small, narrow glimpse. you have to get way more into the uncomfortable realizations of the time.
